2NE1 GOTTA BE YOU MUSIC VIDEO REVIEW

ImageImageImageImage

Gotta Be You is one of my most favorite 2ne1 song in the Crush album. It has a cool dance vibe that you just can’t get enough of like the groups’ other signature songs like ‘Fire’, ‘I am the Best’ and ‘Crush’. Seriously speaking, a lot of fans have been waiting for this music video since it’s been announced by YG Entertainment. Well, the long wait is over. Finally, in celebration of their 5th anniversary, the girls dropped the music video this May 21, 2014.

This music video has the complete vibe of what a 2ne1 music video is suppose to be like. It is colorful, it has great fashion, and what seems to be YG’s fascination with symbolism. A lot of fans were intrigued with 2ne1’s previous music video, ‘Come Back Home’ because of the use of symbols within the story. This made a little confusion to some people in understanding the video. Likewise, I believe symbols yet again play a part in this video; although it is subtle and not too deep as that of ‘Come Back Home.’ It should only take a little time for people to notice these symbols since they flash almost everywhere in the video, and sometimes too quick to notice. I will try my best to count them down and explain as I go along. So here it is!

This music video may be a little confusing if we are to take in the meaning of the lyrics of the song ‘Gotta Be You.’ Since the song, we can assume, is mainly about a woman saying that love isn’t over for there will be no one but the guy for her. We can have a little confusion when we see how their male lead in the video apologize to the girls which seem to contrast the meaning of the song. In this regard, I will be explaining the video in two points of view: 1) that of the 2ne1 members (lyrics) and 2) that of the male lead.

Image

The video opens with a guy wanting to apologize to a girl for doing something wrong, and most probably, causing a breakup and Dara calling up the guy. This introduces us to the two point of views in the MV plot. The guy apologizing for his mistake and the girl wanting to stay in the relationship that was over (according to the lyrics).

Image

Let us focus on the guy first. In his first appearance, the guy wants to apologize for his wrong doing. This is qualified in his next appearance, him explaining about another girl being just a friend. “She’s just a friend, it didn’t mean anything. You have my full attention. I promise

Image

He begs her to stay by his side for leaving him leaves him distraught. In this way we can assume, that yes, he cheated on her and wants her back. It is up to the audience to see his sincerity, especially in the next confession he makes as he states that: “It’s just, nobody’s ever looked at me the way you just did” We can assume that his apology is either sincere or just uttered out of pride in losing a girl.ImageImage

I can say that it is more of the second one because on the next part, the guy throws money on Dara. It is as if saying that he will give her money if that’s what it would do to have her back or giving everything she needs just like how Minzy is seen on a seemingly artificial supermarket.

I can further speculate on this view especially when the guy is seen peeking through an unknown hole in the wall looking if the plan did the trick and seen standing by a wall with the girls video projected through him as if he was observing their reactions.

Image

Image

Either way we see the guy apologizing and at the end got his way when CL came to him. The video ends up with the two of them seemingly saying to each other “It’s Gotta Be You”ImageImage

Now onto the girl/ lyrics based analysis of the video. Lyrically, the music tells of a girl’s feeling after break up. Sometimes, it is denial or in this case hate. However, the lyrics tells us as well that despite hating the guy the girl does not want to meet other men for she still regard him as her destiny and wants to stay with him.

I don’t want a new meeting for some reason
I still hate you a lot
A meeting that was like destiny
and now became like strangers
You left and your scent is still around
We used to be all turnt up
We became further apart
You said it wasn’t true but just wait
Love’s reversal
I shout it today
Let’s go like how it used to be
Rewind forward
XO like the beginning”

We can say the same way with the video, when we see Dara on a telephone seemingly call the guy up wanting to reconcile and return to the way they used to be.

Image

Also, we can say that the girl has practically thrown away the ideal notion of love as a form of give and take relationship. This is when CL was seen standing behind the words “You don’t search for love, you just end up” and Bom with a comic strip “Love is merely madness” Further we can assume that to regain his love or their relationship, she has accepted the fact that he is a playboy but chooses to disregard it. We can also see these on the comic strip (a girl biting her lips-as if enduring the pain) behind Bom.ImageImageWe can also relate this pain to how the girl is treated by the guy. Just like how money is thrown to Dara, or Minzy in the supermarket, or CL with a sports car and cheating on Bom

Another pain the girl felt was probably not being loved for who she is. She was stereotyped as a typically girl who love riches or expensive gifts without being truly understood. This can be shown when Minzy walked into a room full of girls on the same masks, hairstyle etc. It is as if the guy see her just like how he see all other women. Thus in another scene, Bom is seen walking pass girls with different hairstyles, fashion, masks and caps to show their individuality.

ImageImage

Finally, the set and the keys held by the guy actually gives us the impression of a prison. The girls seem to be endlessly walking through a maze aimlessly.

ImageImageImageImageImage

But the lyrics will guide us into thinking that the girls a turning corners looking for the very room where they can find the guy and not aimlessly. Likewise we see the girls having keys with them. It is as if the guy is giving them clues as to where he is or more like playing with them as seen in a die thrown to the ground.

The girls searching for the guy actually verifies the idea of the keys and prison as the lyrics say:

Put me back in the jail that is you
A reality without you is cruel
Even if it hurts like I want to die, I don’t care
I’m a fox so I have nine lives
You’re a wave that blows me over 100 times
I’m okay I’m desperado in the face of love even if it hurts

This also gives us the idea of how desperate the girls are in looking for him when the girls kept on opening lockers, doors etc. Further, their desperateness is shown as they resign themselves into the ways of the guy no matter how sad it is for them.

Of course, for those who watch the MV once, they might find this analysis absurd but just like what I said before, some symbols like keys, die, money, masks and more and their meaning cannot be easily deduce if not watched for at least three times. Some of the fans kept on ridiculing the video for the girls keep on walking on set without dancing. However, I hope that reading this review sheds a little light to that. Also putting a dance on the video would definitely destroy the meaning created behind the video.Over all the plot and its twists is actually easier to catch than that of Come Back Home. This does not however lessens the videos essence. I will give this video plot 5 out of 5 since it is easier than Come Back Home and because it takes less time to decipher meaning throughout the video.

Other things that I feel are needed to be mentioned is the fashion and look of the 2ne1 girls. Usually in a music video of 2ne1 one stands out because of the attire while the others look just okay. This time, all the girls were given enough space and time to show how they have changed. For one, Dara does not look like an idiot with weird hairstyle from hell like that in ‘Happy’ (her most hideous hairstyle ever). Her attire is the simple over-sized dress with a hoodie/ beanie. She actually looks refreshing and beautiful in the video.

Minzy on the other hand showed her maturity and sexiness in her tied up hair showing her, now, thinner face and her sexy pants. i really love Minzy’s Style in this video

Image

Bom has her half of her hair tied up like the usual. They do not seem to experiment too much on Bom’s style. She looks really good however, we have seen her styled like this for a long time. The last time she changed was when she cut her hair during I am the Best promotions and nothing since. But of course, she still looks beautiful. Not to mention her bizarre earrings. It was unique and beautiful.

Cl on the other hand sports her typical midriff and high-waist skirt outfit. Like Bom, CL has been wearing this kind of style for a awhile now and has not been changed. But what was really amazing in her outfit is the earrings she wore like that of Bom’s. It is very unique.

ImageImageImage

Unlike 2ne1 ‘s previous music videos, Gotta be You doesn’t have costume changes. They stick to one style in the entire MV except for CL in the last part of the MV. I can say that this is more simple in sense of styling. It was not over board but definitely catches the 2ne1 colorful and individual vibe. I’m starting to feel that 2ne1 is the only girl group in Korea who can pull off these outfits and accessories. For that I give the MV 4 out of 5. Though the attire is simple and all, well this is 2ne1 we expect little more than a CL changing to an over-sized t-shirt.

Lastly, the set. The set is very crucial in the understanding of the entire concept. Though we did not have the big sized diamond and high-tech lighting like in I am the Best and the cars from Fire and Go Away, the set serves it’s purpose. But then again since we are talking of 2ne1, We have a preset notion of something spectacular like what most fans are waiting for. Yes, it is unfair but 2ne1 is at a point in their career that this kind of MV becomes too simple and leave the fans wanting for more. Though I am not saying that it is bad. Truly, this MV is well-thought off and well-made than most of the KPOP MVs out there that has no meaning or is filled with purely dance or face and body close ups. This is actually a high-level MV than most out there but since 2ne1 is 2ne1 this MV doesn’t seem to be enough. With that said, I give the set a 4 out of 5 and the overall MV a 4 out of 5 just because, we want more than this !

I hope you like my review of 2ne1’s Gotta be You MV.
