Gotta Be You is one of my most favorite 2ne1 song in the Crush album. It has a cool dance vibe that you just can’t get enough of like the groups’ other signature songs like ‘Fire’, ‘I am the Best’ and ‘Crush’. Seriously speaking, a lot of fans have been waiting for this music video since it’s been announced by YG Entertainment. Well, the long wait is over. Finally, in celebration of their 5th anniversary, the girls dropped the music video this May 21, 2014.

This music video has the complete vibe of what a 2ne1 music video is suppose to be like. It is colorful, it has great fashion, and what seems to be YG’s fascination with symbolism. A lot of fans were intrigued with 2ne1’s previous music video, ‘Come Back Home’ because of the use of symbols within the story. This made a little confusion to some people in understanding the video. Likewise, I believe symbols yet again play a part in this video; although it is subtle and not too deep as that of ‘Come Back Home.’ It should only take a little time for people to notice these symbols since they flash almost everywhere in the video, and sometimes too quick to notice. I will try my best to count them down and explain as I go along. So here it is!

This music video may be a little confusing if we are to take in the meaning of the lyrics of the song ‘Gotta Be You.’ Since the song, we can assume, is mainly about a woman saying that love isn’t over for there will be no one but the guy for her. We can have a little confusion when we see how their male lead in the video apologize to the girls which seem to contrast the meaning of the song. In this regard, I will be explaining the video in two points of view: 1) that of the 2ne1 members (lyrics) and 2) that of the male lead.

The video opens with a guy wanting to apologize to a girl for doing something wrong, and most probably, causing a breakup and Dara calling up the guy. This introduces us to the two point of views in the MV plot. The guy apologizing for his mistake and the girl wanting to stay in the relationship that was over (according to the lyrics).

Let us focus on the guy first. In his first appearance, the guy wants to apologize for his wrong doing. This is qualified in his next appearance, him explaining about another girl being just a friend. “She’s just a friend, it didn’t mean anything. You have my full attention. I promise

He begs her to stay by his side for leaving him leaves him distraught. In this way we can assume, that yes, he cheated on her and wants her back. It is up to the audience to see his sincerity, especially in the next confession he makes as he states that: “It’s just, nobody’s ever looked at me the way you just did” We can assume that his apology is either sincere or just uttered out of pride in losing a girl.ImageImage

I can say that it is more of the second one because on the next part, the guy throws money on Dara. It is as if saying that he will give her money if that’s what it would do to have her back or giving everything she needs just like how Minzy is seen on a seemingly artificial supermarket.

I can further speculate on this view especially when the guy is seen peeking through an unknown hole in the wall looking if the plan did the trick and seen standing by a wall with the girls video projected through him as if he was observing their reactions.

Either way we see the guy apologizing and at the end got his way when CL came to him. The video ends up with the two of them seemingly saying to each other “It’s Gotta Be You”ImageImage

Now onto the girl/ lyrics based analysis of the video. Lyrically, the music tells of a girl’s feeling after break up. Sometimes, it is denial or in this case hate. However, the lyrics tells us as well that despite hating the guy the girl does not want to meet other men for she still regard him as her destiny and wants to stay with him.

I don’t want a new meeting for some reason
I still hate you a lot
A meeting that was like destiny
and now became like strangers
You left and your scent is still around
We used to be all turnt up
We became further apart
You said it wasn’t true but just wait
Love’s reversal
I shout it today
Let’s go like how it used to be
Rewind forward
XO like the beginning”

We can say the same way with the video, when we see Dara on a telephone seemingly call the guy up wanting to reconcile and return to the way they used to be.

Also, we can say that the girl has practically thrown away the ideal notion of love as a form of give and take relationship. This is when CL was seen standing behind the words “You don’t search for love, you just end up” and Bom with a comic strip “Love is merely madness” Further we can assume that to regain his love or their relationship, she has accepted the fact that he is a playboy but chooses to disregard it. We can also see these on the comic strip (a girl biting her lips-as if enduring the pain) behind Bom.ImageImageWe can also relate this pain to how the girl is treated by the guy. Just like how money is thrown to Dara, or Minzy in the supermarket, or CL with a sports car and cheating on Bom

Another pain the girl felt was probably not being loved for who she is. She was stereotyped as a typically girl who love riches or expensive gifts without being truly understood. This can be shown when Minzy walked into a room full of girls on the same masks, hairstyle etc. It is as if the guy see her just like how he see all other women. Thus in another scene, Bom is seen walking pass girls with different hairstyles, fashion, masks and caps to show their individuality.

Finally, the set and the keys held by the guy actually gives us the impression of a prison. The girls seem to be endlessly walking through a maze aimlessly.

But the lyrics will guide us into thinking that the girls a turning corners looking for the very room where they can find the guy and not aimlessly. Likewise we see the girls having keys with them. It is as if the guy is giving them clues as to where he is or more like playing with them as seen in a die thrown to the ground.

The girls searching for the guy actually verifies the idea of the keys and prison as the lyrics say:

Put me back in the jail that is you
A reality without you is cruel
Even if it hurts like I want to die, I don’t care
I’m a fox so I have nine lives
You’re a wave that blows me over 100 times
I’m okay I’m desperado in the face of love even if it hurts

This also gives us the idea of how desperate the girls are in looking for him when the girls kept on opening lockers, doors etc. Further, their desperateness is shown as they resign themselves into the ways of the guy no matter how sad it is for them.

Of course, for those who watch the MV once, they might find this analysis absurd but just like what I said before, some symbols like keys, die, money, masks and more and their meaning cannot be easily deduce if not watched for at least three times. Some of the fans kept on ridiculing the video for the girls keep on walking on set without dancing. However, I hope that reading this review sheds a little light to that. Also putting a dance on the video would definitely destroy the meaning created behind the video.Over all the plot and its twists is actually easier to catch than that of Come Back Home. This does not however lessens the videos essence. I will give this video plot 5 out of 5 since it is easier than Come Back Home and because it takes less time to decipher meaning throughout the video.

Other things that I feel are needed to be mentioned is the fashion and look of the 2ne1 girls. Usually in a music video of 2ne1 one stands out because of the attire while the others look just okay. This time, all the girls were given enough space and time to show how they have changed. For one, Dara does not look like an idiot with weird hairstyle from hell like that in ‘Happy’ (her most hideous hairstyle ever). Her attire is the simple over-sized dress with a hoodie/ beanie. She actually looks refreshing and beautiful in the video.

Minzy on the other hand showed her maturity and sexiness in her tied up hair showing her, now, thinner face and her sexy pants. i really love Minzy’s Style in this video

Bom has her half of her hair tied up like the usual. They do not seem to experiment too much on Bom’s style. She looks really good however, we have seen her styled like this for a long time. The last time she changed was when she cut her hair during I am the Best promotions and nothing since. But of course, she still looks beautiful. Not to mention her bizarre earrings. It was unique and beautiful.

Cl on the other hand sports her typical midriff and high-waist skirt outfit. Like Bom, CL has been wearing this kind of style for a awhile now and has not been changed. But what was really amazing in her outfit is the earrings she wore like that of Bom’s. It is very unique.

Unlike 2ne1 ‘s previous music videos, Gotta be You doesn’t have costume changes. They stick to one style in the entire MV except for CL in the last part of the MV. I can say that this is more simple in sense of styling. It was not over board but definitely catches the 2ne1 colorful and individual vibe. I’m starting to feel that 2ne1 is the only girl group in Korea who can pull off these outfits and accessories. For that I give the MV 4 out of 5. Though the attire is simple and all, well this is 2ne1 we expect little more than a CL changing to an over-sized t-shirt.

Lastly, the set. The set is very crucial in the understanding of the entire concept. Though we did not have the big sized diamond and high-tech lighting like in I am the Best and the cars from Fire and Go Away, the set serves it’s purpose. But then again since we are talking of 2ne1, We have a preset notion of something spectacular like what most fans are waiting for. Yes, it is unfair but 2ne1 is at a point in their career that this kind of MV becomes too simple and leave the fans wanting for more. Though I am not saying that it is bad. Truly, this MV is well-thought off and well-made than most of the KPOP MVs out there that has no meaning or is filled with purely dance or face and body close ups. This is actually a high-level MV than most out there but since 2ne1 is 2ne1 this MV doesn’t seem to be enough. With that said, I give the set a 4 out of 5 and the overall MV a 4 out of 5 just because, we want more than this !

I hope you like my review of 2ne1’s Gotta be You MV.

2ne1 Happy Music Video Review

2ne1’s Happy Music Video came the same day as 2ne1’s Come Back Home.  This music video, for those who keep up with 2ne1, definitely was made during the I am the Best days. So you’ll see their hair and style are way different from their Crush Album.

The MV is kinda reminiscent of Bigbang’s Bad Boy that was also shot in the US where the boys walked all over the place and in this case the girls crossing all kinds of streets there are. This mv is actually very much different from Come Back Home that has a very serious vibe. Happy actually has a lighter mood but it actually is contrary to the lyrics of the song which is actually sad.

Now, this video is really entertaining in many levels in comparison to Come Back Home. First of all, this music video cracks up the people with these cute colorful characters and bubble pop- ups that comes out everywhere through-out the video.

This actually made the entire video cute and funny. Second is their outfit. As usual this is the trademark Jeremy Scott styling the 2ne1 girls. Adding up with the cute characters and pop- ups are their colorful outfit.

She was dressed up with this long overly printed dress with fur and crazy wedges. It was okay but I think she can’t handle long dresses unlike Bom in I Love You promotions. But I do love her next outfit which was the yellow long sleeved turtle neck paired up with a short skater skirt. It was really cute. I also love her random accessories here.

h5 h6 h13 h15

Bom as usual is wearing her illegally short dress (joke) that looks so good on her with a cute pink cape like what she wore for Falling in Love promotions. Just like CL her accessories are just so cool especially those chains on her dress falling to her thighs. She changed outfit to a printed sleeved top paired up with checkered pants which was unusual but not new for Bom. I love it!

h11 h16 h10 h9 h8

Dara on the other hand is dress with an over sized black top and printed skirt and later with a black dress with pink flames paired with a pink fur layer. She really was cute with the big clothes and accessories.

h20 h14 h17 h18

Minzy was definitely wearing her purple hair from years back. I actually love her netted jacket and yellow beanie. It actually gives a cool feminine vibe to it. Then she changed into this purple sleeved top/ dress and a very very long scarf… well it was outrageous but okay that’s Jeremy Scott for you.

h21 h7 h12 h2 h19

Third, probably it’s not funny nor entertaining but I just have to complain… What the hell did they do to Dara’s Hair???? Did they gel strands of her hair ON HER FACE??? WTF??

h22 h23

YG please stop experimenting on Dara’s hair!!!! YG has already destroyed Dara’s hair but for all Dara fans out there this is too much!!! please. It’s a good thing that She’s so beautiful…

h25 h26

Overall this MV is cute and fun. Oh I just gotta add… the 2ne1 way of crossing the street. It is so cool yet dangerous. hahaha

1. Walking carefree… dancing and turning around the street

2. Skip while crossing the street

3. Crossing the street without looking straight or backward

h29 h30 h31 h33 h34

4. Standing in the middle of the street.

2ne1 Come Back Home Music Video Review

Hi! It’s been awhile. Today I will be giving a review of Korean Girl Group 2ne1’s new Music Video Come Back Home from their recently released 2nd full album Crush.

2ne1 is a girl group who has been really taking their time to release an album and finally they have released the long-awaited Crush album. Last March 3, 2014 YG (2ne1’s agency) finally released the music video for one of their title track Come Back Home which was said to have cost the agency 500 million won.

Come Back Home truly was a feast to the eyes. It’s a sci-fi extravaganza with a great sense of drama. It actually reminds of Matrix or if anyone is familiar with Sword Art Online where people actually goes into the virtual world.

2NE1 Come Back Home Feature

The video opens with a world not too far from our own (probably in 10 to 20 years from now) with a huge screen with “Virtual Paradise” on it ultimately signifying that the MV will take you on a sci-fi themed video. Truly the graphics are amazing.

The video starts with CL spray paint walls like in the UGLY MV years back, which at first I find very stereotypical of 2ne1 since they are the only girl group I’ve seen who takes bad-ass to that level. However, Minzy comes in on a really cool car which gives me the feel of the futuristic theme.

The thing that I love the most in this video is actually the drama the goes with it. Usually girl groups would go with choreographic moves to go along with the futuristic theme of music videos, but 2ne1 gives off drama as a counterpart of the strong sci-fi theme of the video. Of course, if it’s drama 2ne1 has no other than the resident actress, sweet vocalist Dara Park.

The drama is centered on Dara’s relationship with this guy, who I first thought was a drug addict because of a scene with him crushing meds by a spoon lol. But I, apparently, am not too far from the idea.

According to YG, the video is about a relationship affected by technology. This so-called obsession in technology takes a toll on a relationship wherein even if a couple is together, they don’t really talk that much nor see eye to eye. This I believe was well executed by Dara and the male lead as they barely look in each other’s eyes.

And so, the girls decided to destroy the virtual world, which is really what they do best. hehehe. And finally, they enter the ‘Virtual Paradise’  with their alternate personalities dressed in black and ready to kick ass.

The next phase of the video is practically utter destruction of the virtual world, with 2ne1 leading a group of mob trashing the place.

Overall, for the concept of the video I will give 2ne1 and YG 9 points. 2ne1 has once again proven themselves as a group with content and substance not only with the lyrics of the song but also in the conceptualization of the video. It truly is something people can relate to. The concept allows 2ne1 to show the great musician that they are with the bad-ass feel that is so 2ne1 without losing sensibility that shows the woman that they are. It gives of a sense of strength and vulnerability as well. Also, it is thanks to 2ne1 that finally we are leaving the sexy concept once again led by different girl groups these past few months. So why 9? actually at first watch this video is a little confusing. You have to watch it again and probably read YG’s explanation to get it. so yeah!

As for graphics, definitely  a 10 point marks as well, their utilization of the technology is enough and not overpowering the video. Some comment says that this is nothing but seriously, how many group have spent half a million on a single video with this kind of quality? I say, none or if there are I don’t really remember. This is truly worth the wait of its delays.

As for the costumes and hair and make up, I’d give it an 8. The costumes are good but I think YG can get 2ne1 a different vibe with a different set of outfit. People has seen 2ne1 dressed up with very colorful attire and black leather before so maybe at least a little change with the design because as usual, Minzy is fully covered, Bom with a short dress, Dara, with the beanie and unusually lose top with a bat (like in IATB) and CL the over-the-top attire. I am not saying that the attire did not match the theme, it actually did but maybe a little change in the image (XoX). As for the make up, I hate Minzy’s eye make up. It’s awful! how can they pop her eyes like that? That’s my only complain for the make up otherwise, the girls look nice.

As for the hair I love that everybody gets to have the long hair especially Minzy. Long hair really looks good on her. I have to commend Dara for pulling off the blue hair and I think the one with bangs. I’m not sure if that is her really hair or what but she looks great as usual.

As for the acting, I’d give Dara a good 10 point mark. She delivered really well. You don’t even need to see her eyes when she cries but you can tell how sad she is. Also, the subtle looks and frowns she make makes up for the lack of dialogue. It already tells the story itself. As for the guy… he’s okay. He’s not great but he’s good. Also I just have to note that Dara for the first time actually looks her age. I’m not saying this ‘coz she old and looks like one but the role fit her well.

Overall, the video is really amazing. You definitely  have to watch it!
